Kiln Sites of Celadon in Gangjin

Kiln sites of Celadon in Gangjin include all the kiln sites from the early Goryeo Dynasty to the late Goryeo Dynasty, where the birth, developments, and decline of Goryeo Celadon can be shown at a glance. Kiln sites of Celadon in Gangjin were designated as the Historic Site No. 68 by the notification of the Ministry of Education in 1963 and also were included in the potential list of the UNESCO World Heritage in 1994.

Numerous ground and excavation investigations have been conducted by Korean scholars for the kiln sites of Celadon since the 1960s. 188 kiln sites of Celadon, including 75 sites in Yongun-ri, Daegu-myeon, 59 sites in Gyeyul-ri, 43 sites in Sadang-ri, 6 sites in Sudong-ri, and 5 sites in Samheung-ri, Chilryang-myeon, were discovered by Haegang Koryo Celadon in 1992, through the precision ground investigations. Among these kiln sites, the excavation investigations were conducted for the Site No. 25 in Gyeyul-ri (1928), areas around Sadang-ri near the museum (between 1964 and 1965), the Site No. 41 in Sadang-ri (between 1973 and 1977), the Site No. 9 and 10 in Yongun-ri (between 1980 and 1982), the Site No. 1, 3 and 4 (between 2001 and 2002), the Site No. 43 in Sadang-ri (2012), and the Site No. 63 in Yongun-ri.

Daegu-myeon, Yongwoon-ri

Areas around Yongun-ri, Daegu-myeon include the Site No. 63, the first production site of Celadon in Gangjin and other kiln sites from the early and mid Goryeo Dynasty that are mainly spread at the foot of a mountain in Yongmun and Hangdong villages near a reservoir.

Daegu-myeon, Gyeyoo-ri

The ceramic industry was operated in Gyeyul-ri, Daegu-myeon following Yongun-ri, during the mid Goryeo Dynasty, with the kiln sites spread at the foot of a mountain in Gyechi, Cheongryong, and Nansan villages and farmlands nearby.

Daegu-myeon, Sadang-ri

Sadang-ri in Daegu-myeon has been the central place of production of Celadon from the mid Goryeo Dynasty to the late Goryeo Dynasty. Particularly, the Site No. 7, 23, and 27 in Sadang-ri around the Celadon Museum in the mid Goryeo Dynasty and the Site No. 10 in Sadang-ri in the late Goryeo Dynasty are representative kiln sites.

Daegu-myeon, Sudong-ri

Sudong-ri in Daegu-myeon is adjacent to Sadang-ri, with kilns from the mid and late Goryeo Dynasty spread all over the place.

Chillyang-myeon, Samheung-ri

Samheung-ri in Chilryang-myeon is a boundary between Sadang-ri Mountain and Yeogye Mountain, where kiln sites from the early Goryeo Dynasty were discovered.
