Kiln Sites of Goryeo Celadon

The kiln sites of Goryeo Celadon are found all over the Korean Peninsula, with these sites spread intensively in different places, according to the early, mid and late Goryeo Dynasty.

In the early Goryeo Dynasty

In the early Goryeo Dynasty, the brick kilns that were made by adopting the Chinese kiln-making skills were intensively spread across the mid-western parts of Korea, while mud kilns that were made after earthen-ware kilns were primarily spread across southwestern parts of Korea.

In the mid Goryeo Dynasty

In the mid Goryeo Dynasty, the brick kilns disappeared and mud kilns that were popular in the southwestern parts of Korea were used to make Celadon. During this period, Celadon was produced at the kilns mainly in Gangjin and Buan, subsequently spread further into other areas, including Daejeon, Eumseong, Yongin, Yeoju, Chilgok, Busan, and Haenam.

In the late Goryeo Dynasty

In the late Goryeo Dynasty, kilns were mud kilns with the number of kilns decreased drastically. In Gangjin area there were more kilns in the late Goryeo Dynstay and in other areas, including Suyu-dong in Seoul and Hwangji-ri in Yecheon, Sanggam Celadon of the latest Goryeo Dynasty was produced, which was subsequently inherited into Buncheong Celadon in the early Joseon Dynasty.
